The airport was originally used by the Auckland Aero Club as an airfield before being transformed into Auckland’s main airport. The airport’s first flight leaving was the Air New Zealand DC-8 in 1965. It was headed to Sydney. The official opening of the airport was in 1966 during the Auckland Anniversary weekend. Building of an international terminal followed in 1977 and was named after Jean Batten. The terminal was then altered in 2005 and thus the arriving and departing passengers were separated.

The main access to the airport is by road. There is a free shuttle bus connecting the airport international and domestic terminals. Another walkway also links the two terminals. The State Highways 20A and 20B are connected to the airport. Highway 20A leaves from the north and you can access central, western and northern suburbs and also Northland. Highway 20B leaves from the east and you can access the southern and eastern Auckland. There are cycle lanes that were implemented on the highways for the cyclists accessing the airport by bicycle.

You can take a bus that runs from 5am to 10.30pm everyday between the international and domestic terminal. You can walk for approximately ten minutes. $16 is charged for fare by the Airbus Express. The bus operates 24/7 from the Auckland airport. You can buy tickets online, Airbus Tickets Kiosks and from the driver.
There are many services being offered at the airport and you can make an earlier booking if you need an Auckland airport transfer. Sometimes there are many bookings made and it can be hard to find a taxi if you did not book earlier.
